Growing up, the kitchen was always the heart of our home, a place where laughter mingled with the aroma of something delicious wafting through the air. One of my fondest memories is of my grandmother sharing her secret to an irresistible Strawberry Tiramisu. This isn’t just any dessert—it’s a delightful twist on a classic that brings together the rich decadence of tiramisu with the fresh, vibrant flavors of strawberries. It’s a recipe that feels like a warm hug, perfect for family gatherings or a cozy evening in. Today, I’m excited to share this cherished recipe with you, hoping it becomes a staple in your home too.
Why You’ll Love This Dessert
-
Easy to Make: The beauty of this Strawberry Tiramisu lies in its simplicity. With straightforward steps and everyday ingredients, it’s a dessert that welcomes both novices and seasoned home cooks. The lack of baking means less room for error, making it a confidence booster for anyone trying their hand at making a tiramisu for the first time.
-
Fresh and Fruity: Traditional tiramisu, with its coffee and cocoa notes, is a classic favorite, but the addition of strawberries introduces a refreshing and fruity twist. The juicy strawberries not only enhance the visual appeal with their vibrant color but also bring a tangy sweetness that balances the creaminess beautifully.
-
Kid-Friendly: By omitting the coffee, this version becomes a family-friendly dessert that even the little ones can enjoy. The gentle flavors of strawberries and cream are universally appealing, making it a hit with both kids and adults.
-
Make-Ahead Magic: As with many layered desserts, time is an ally. This Strawberry Tiramisu benefits from being made in advance, allowing the flavors to meld and enhance over several hours. This makes it an ideal choice for dinner parties or gatherings, allowing you to focus on the main course without last-minute dessert stress.
-
Customizable: Whether you prefer a touch of liqueur for a more adult flavor or wish to make it non-alcoholic, this recipe is wonderfully adaptable. Swap the framboise or Cointreau with a non-alcoholic syrup or juice to suit your preference.
The Recipe
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 6
Calories: 693 per serving
Ingredients
For the Zabaglione:
– 4 large egg yolks
– 1/2 cup granulated sugar
– 3 tablespoons framboise or Cointreau
– 3/4 cup heavy cream, chilled
– 1/4 cup powdered sugar
– 8 ounces mascarpone, softened
For the Assembly:
– 1/2 cup high-quality strawberry jam
– 3 tablespoons framboise or Cointreau
– 24 lady fingers
– 1 pound of strawberries, stems removed and thinly sliced
– 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
Instructions
-
Make the Zabaglione: In a medium bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar. Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water, ensuring it doesn’t touch the water, and beat with an electric mixer until it reaches 160°F. This step is crucial for achieving the right texture and ensuring safety from raw eggs. Remove from heat, let cool for 5 minutes, and stir in 3 tablespoons of liqueur.
-
Whip the Cream: In another bowl, beat the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Add powdered sugar and mix until combined. Set aside the mascarpone. Whipping the cream separately ensures a light, airy texture that balances the density of mascarpone.
-
Combine: Once the zabaglione has cooled for 10 minutes, beat in the mascarpone until smooth. Gently fold in the whipped cream. This step is where the magic happens, as the mascarpone and whipped cream create a silky, creamy texture that serves as the perfect base for the strawberries.
-
Prepare the Strawberry Mixture: Mix the strawberry jam with 3 tablespoons of liqueur in a shallow dish. This mixture is the essence that the lady fingers will soak up, infusing each layer with the strawberry’s sweetness and liqueur’s subtle complexity.
-
Assemble: Quickly dip the lady fingers in the strawberry mixture, covering the bottom of your serving dish with half. Layer with half of the strawberries and sprinkle with sugar. Spread half of the zabaglione mixture on top. Repeat the layers, finishing with the remaining zabaglione. The layering process is essential to ensure each bite is a harmonious blend of strawberries, cream, and lady fingers.
-
Chill: Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. The chilling period allows the flavors to meld and the dessert to set, making it easier to slice and serve.

The Benefits of Each Ingredient
-
Egg Yolks: Essential for the creamy zabaglione, adding richness and depth. They provide a custard-like base that complements the mascarpone.
-
Mascarpone: Offers a smooth texture and authentic tiramisu flavor. This Italian cheese is the cornerstone of tiramisu, providing a velvety richness that can’t be substituted.
-
Strawberries: Provide a fresh, juicy contrast to the creamy layers. They add a burst of color and natural sweetness that elevates the dessert.
-
Lady Fingers: The backbone of the dish, soaking up the strawberry and liqueur flavors. These sponge-like cookies act as the structural layers that hold the dessert together.
-
Liqueur: Adds a sophisticated touch, enhancing the fruity notes. Whether you choose framboise for a raspberry hint or Cointreau for a citrusy zest, the liqueur adds depth to the flavor profile.
What to Serve With This Dessert

Storage & Leftover Tips
Store any leftover Strawberry Tiramisu covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The flavors meld beautifully as it sits, making it a wonderful make-ahead dessert. If you’re planning to enjoy it over several days, consider individual servings in small jars for easy storage and serving. These jar servings also make for an elegant presentation for picnics or potlucks.
Customization Ideas
- Boozy Boost: For a more pronounced liqueur flavor, consider soaking the lady fingers a bit longer in the strawberry and liqueur mixture.
- Non-Alcoholic Version: Replace the liqueur with a splash of orange juice or a strawberry-flavored syrup for a family-friendly option.
- Berry Medley: Experiment with adding raspberries or blueberries for a mixed berry tiramisu.
- Chocolate Lovers: Sprinkle cocoa powder or grated chocolate between layers for a hint of chocolate flavor that complements the strawberries.

Method
- First, make the zabaglione: in a medium bowl that you can fit over a pan of simmering water (or the top part of a double boiler), add the egg yolks and granulated sugar. Make sure the bottom of the bowl does NOT touch the water. Set the bowl over barely simmering water (not boiling!) and beat continuously with an electric hand mixer until it reaches 160 degrees. Once it’s up to temperature, remove the zabaglione from the heat and let cool for 5 minutes. Finally, stir in the remaining 3 tablespoons of liquor.
- Meanwhile, in another bowl, beat the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Add the powdered sugar and beat until combined. Have ready the mascarpone on the side.
- Once the zabaglione has cooled for 10 minutes, beat in the mascarpone. Finally, fold in the whipped cream.
- In a small, shallow dish stir together the jam and 3 tablespoons of the liquor. Set this aside–this is your lady finger dipping mixture. Have the sliced strawberries ready on the side.
- Have your serving dish ready. Dip one lady finger in the mixture and flip it over immediately so that it doesn’t soak for more than 2 seconds per side. Fit half of them in the bottom of your serving dish (you might have to cut some to fit). Continue until the bottom of the serving dish is covered.
- Place half of the strawberries on top and spread into a layer. Sprinkle half of the granulated sugar evenly over the top of the strawberries. Spoon half of zabaglione-cream mixture on top of the lady finger layer. Then, repeat. The top layer is the zabaglione mixture.
- Cover tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.
